Sewage systems are relatively new in Nepal. This sign is outside Pokhara town. Yet another reminder of the basic things we take for granted at home. A swim in crystal clear Zurich lake and Menlo river really is a huge luxury to me now. I'm looking forward to my first zuri schwim!
That said, I have been so content in the sub-tropical climate. There are few big insects, and I have not yet seen a rodent yet. Most locals seem to keep their places clean, the food waste is minimal and rubbish doesn't smell like it does in the high heat of the tropical countries. Not nice to see the river beds in Kathmandu or a hillside in the country in Nepal used as open dumping troughs, but great to see all guesthouses and cafes with filtered water for refills. Tourists are encouraged to buy iodine tablets and use a personal water bottle which they can refill anywhere for a tiny fee. All hot holiday destinations should be enforcing similar restrictions on plastic water bottles since few of these countries have recycling systems.
